Take a powerful and inspiring road trip and explore the sites and stories that celebrate the contributions of African Americans and their significance in the cultural heritage of northeast North Carolina. This self-guided, digital heritage trail includes more than 20 outdoor interpretive signs and monuments, parks, waterways and museums.
The African American Experience of Northeast North Carolina (AAENENC) is a collaborative effort; developed, funded and facilitated by the tourism departments from each of the nine participating counties – Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Pasquotank,
Perquimans, Gates, Martin and Washington – with valuable insight from an Advisory Board comprised of regional civic leaders, educators and historians.
The significant role that African Americans played in our region’s heritage extends far beyond the sites you’ll currently find on this trail. We encourage you to visit the website, explore these historical sites, share ideas to improve and grow the project, or sign a letter/resolution of support.
